Federal Clerkship Opportunities (2018–2019 Term)
Applications are due by June 23, 2017 (5:00pm ET)

This message is to inform you of a special opportunity to be considered for two federal district court clerkships – and one bankruptcy court clerkship – in one interview, and to encourage you to apply. I am currently working as a federal judicial law clerk for the Honorable Gerald Bruce Lee of the Eastern District of Virginia. Judge Lee and several of his colleagues feel that it is important to encourage more minorities to compete for federal judicial clerkships.  These judges accept and consider law clerk applicants of all backgrounds, and this opportunity is merely an effort in addition to, not in lieu of, traditional application channels.

The Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program is a referral program run by judges. Participating judges screen qualified law student applicants, conduct panel interviews with twelve students, and consider them for full-time clerkship positions. At the conclusion of this initial process, students who are not extended an offer by one of the judges may have their application packages shared with additional judges who have requested information on applicants through JTB.

Three federal judges will be conducting a round of interviews in connection with Just the Beginning–A Pipeline Organization’s Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program. Twelve students will be selected to interview; you may not attend unless you are specifically invited to do so. The interview will occur in Alexandria, Virginia on Saturday, July, 29 2017.  The selected students will be notified of the exact location of the interview and their time slot.

Judge Raymond Jackson (E.D. Va.) and Judge Benita Pearson (N.D. Ohio) will be participating in the 2017 law clerk interview session.  Additionally, United States Bankruptcy Judge Kilnette Kindred (E.D. Va.) will also be participating.   Please note that the clerkships are for one-year terms starting in 2018.

Each judge will review applications and participate in deciding which students to invite to this special round of interviews. You must submit a separate application package via OSCAR to each judge whom you would like to consider your application.  Please see below for further clarification on application deadlines and submission guidelines for specific judges. The panel will only interview candidates who will agree to be considered for a clerkship by at least two of the three participating judges. The application deadline is June 23, 2017.

Please see below for further instructions on submitting your clerkship application materials online via OSCAR.  Paper applications will not be accepted (except Judge Pearson). If you are considering applying to these judges, it is of the utmost importance that you begin to gather your application materials now.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any general questions about the application process, but do NOT contact chambers of the Judges that you have applied to with respect to the status of your applications.  Candidates who advance to the interview round will be notified by email.
